Ok, if you really want to know about The Budget give me a ring, but I would rather talk about something else: your budget. A lot of businesses have a March year end and it is a good time to be looking at what profits you are expecting to make and what expenditure you have incurred, and most importantly, what to do about it.

Did you really need to spend xyz in the year? Or was it a shiny new thing that didn’t live up to the salesman’s promises? It’s time to do some pruning and make sure that your money is working hard for you. A business is an investment, just one that is actively managed. You wouldn’t sit back and put up with rubbish interest rates would you (or are you?). I split my expenses into 4 categories.

Need to have: Software, professional membership, computer etc (things I can’t do without).

Good to have: Call answering, subcontractors etc (not essential but make my life a whole lot easier and/or more profitable).

Trial stuff: Spending on new ideas, development if you like. This needs to be judged and either moved to either of the categories above or down to the 4th, which is:

Things I don’t need: These might have seemed like a good idea at the time (or indeed might once have worked) but are now not pulling their weight and need to be got rid of.

Marketing is a good example for the third group . Are you getting the maximum bang for your buck as our US cousins would say. If so do more of it (forget about a marketing budget NOW, so long as the cash flow works and the ROI is good and you can service the demand, keep going), if not get rid and try something else.

Next week Friday is Good Friday, so I will be sending on Thursday, until then, have a great week.
