If you’ve seen the iconic film “The Italian Job” (original not remake) you will remember the classic opening sequence where an orange Lamborghini Miura is driven along a twisty alpine road with Matt Monro’s silky tones singing “On days like these”. Perfect (up until the tunnel obviously).
Now, whether old movies and old cars are your cup of tea or not, the thing is that life isn’t really about having stuff, it’s really about experiencing stuff. Happiness (according to researchers) is felt two ways. Firstly, how are you feeling right now, and secondly, how you remember feeling.
The first kind is rather independent of money. Once you have enough to live a comfortable life extra cash doesn’t equal extra happiness. However, the second kind (called experiential happiness) does increase as you become wealthier. That’s all about looking back on what you had or did. This time apparently, the more the better.
So you have two options. One is to get a lot richer so you can do more and buy more.
Two is to learn to properly live in the moment so it genuinely doesn’t bother you.
Both of these are, however, hard to achieve. The second especially so, although long term it offers the best results and is entirely inflation and recession proof.
A third way though might be to select an ideal lifestyle and then look for ways to “hack” this that are more affordable. Then you can enjoy the moment AND look back on the awesome things you got up to. The secret is to work out what you REALLY want, rather than what you THINK you want.
For example, do you want to actually own a Lamborghini or is it that you dream of driving one through the alps on a sunny day. Well buying one might be formidably expensive but you can hire them for a few days for a few thousand pounds. You still can’t call it cheap but your dreams might be more affordable than you think.
